    The typical reason to "gray something out" on the web is to show it is no longer a possible option (one cannot select it)--in this case, it seems that if they can still express their preference by selecting a new option then it shouldn't be grayed out.

    For accessiblity reasons this would also benefit from a different kind of cue that doesn't rely on color--like some icons or such.
