  1. EDU for Ares

We would like to have a separate tool for upload of documents into the Ares similar to the EDU for ILLiad.

This would help us reduce the applications our scanning staff need to know (and we don't want to give them access to entries that they might inadvertently change).

Ideally, this tool would allow us to send to a queue of our choice instead of being hardwired to go straight to 'Item Available for Reserves'. This would allow us to proof the documents before they are delivered for courses.

The BatchItemUpload feature still uses the Ares client. I’d like a…

  2. Page Count should understand en dashes as well as hyphens in the Pages field.

According to several style guides (APA, Chicago, etc.), the proper way to write page ranges is to use an en dash, not a hyphen (so 251–75, not 251-75). While most people use a hyphen, there is a significant population of faculty and PhD students who enter citations the "correct" way with an en dash, and Ares doesn't understand it. In order for the page count to work in that case, staff must delete the en dash and replace it with a hyphen. This shouldn't be necessary; Ares should understand both ways of writing a page range and automatically use that…

  3. Allow customers to determine which status/queue batch scanning lands in

We would like to enable a quality control check before scans go out for consumption by patrons. Frequently, scanners are also faster than copyright holders for getting items attached, so we would like to send to a 'Scan - QC' queue to let all of the parallel processes catch up before releasing.. Unfortunately, the status rule for batch processing is hard-coded to 'Available in Electronic Reserves', so we have to publich, then unpublish the items. This feels inefficient.

  4. Allow searching of Course ID in Course Info Item Search

The item Course Information Search criteria should include the Ares Course ID and retrieve the list of items on that course. This would address a common need to batch route a set of items associated with a course. Alternately, allow the batch edit to change a current status.

My current workaround is to visit the queue where the majority of items are held, filter to the course number, and batch route.

  5. Allow custom defaults for ItemType new item creation settings in the staff client

Grinnell College would like the option to have new items that are created in the staff client to default to SER, instead of the current option, MON, in the ItemType field.

  6. Keep all tabs open when moving between processing sites

We use multiple processing sites. If I have a search or an item record open, they automatically close when I switch to the other site. It would be great if that search or item record stayed active despite what site I'm on.

  7. Ability to limit which status(es) batch item upload will work with

They would like for the batch item upload to only upload files for items that are at specific queues, such as 'In Stacks Searching' and/or 'Awaiting Scanning.' They would like for it to work the way Odyssey Helper does in ILLiad. This is because the batch upload functionality automatically routes the item to available on reserves. Staff might still have to do a few things with it, such as finish copyright processing.

  8. It'd be nice to have active links in the location field for eReserves items (similar to how links are displayed in the Link Checker).

Therefore, there would be no need to open the item record in order to access the link, and it would also make it easier to copy/paste.

  9. Monitoring length of time item is in "Awaiting copyright processing" virtual queue

It would be nice to measure how long items stay in the “Awaiting Copyright Processing” queue. Currently, when staff open an item in this queue and check for copyright compliance, if everything is ok, they simply remove the checkmark in the “Copyright required” box and the item is removed from the queue. However, removing the checkmark is not recorded in the “History” tab of the item. Therefore, I cannot see a way to measure (retrospectively) the time it takes between an item arriving in that queue (currently I look at the CurrentStatusDate to see when an item has arrived in…

  10. Check out feature for instructor owned items

Currently, the majority of our physical reserves are faculty copies that we have to add as temporary items to our ILS. This causes all manner of problems for our catalogers and for ILL (as we get a number of requests for these items). However, if Ares had a system very similar to the one in ILLiad that allows us to check in items from other libraries, I feel this would solve that problem. In ILLiad, we check a book from a lending library in using the ILL number, and a slip prints out with our TN, allowing us to scan…

  11. Change item deletion process to be safer and allow some form of undelete/recovery.

If a staff user deletes an item, it would be good to have that delete "delayed" until the end of the day in case it needs to be recovered immediately.
