Provide automatic OCR for posted PDFs
It would be wonderful if Atlas could provide a way to automatically convert PDFs to a more accessible format by performing automatic OCR on the documents uploaded or scanned. Many of these PDFs are re-used when the courses are taught again, so it would be great if OCR could be done on all PDFs in the Ares folders.

The illiad - odyssey document viewer could be used to do this with abby in the background if libraries wanted to sit and proof the docs. even better would be the publishing/conversion to epub. just one step away from CDL...

Having a document that is OCR is more accessible and equitable as it allows the document to be read using a screen reader.

This can happen with a watch folder in Abby fine reader running on the server. If this is not functionality that can be built into the system, can we at least get integration with this best of industry product?

I would also be interested in a way to flag that a PDF has been confirmed accessible. If we put the work into creating the accessible document, then we would not have to confirm each item when accessible documents have been requested in a class.

We currently run OCR using Adobe, but it would be a tremendous time saver if Ares could do it automatically!

We currently do this outside of Ares with ABBYY, but some kind of integration would be good.

Maybe if ARES could create it's own version of PDF's? Adobe is getting more expensive and we don't need all the features of Adobe or most other PDF creators. We need to be able to scan, OCR, remove artifacts and post.
