  1. Allow admins to mark some fields as required on item screen in staff client

One use case we have now: We want the "Nature of Work" on item screen to be required in order to enforce staff's input in this field. It should allow admins to configure in the system which field should be required.

  2. Allow Full Proxy users to import courses from CourseValidation in the web

If the Instructor is unavailable to import upcoming courses from Course Validation, it would be best if their Full Proxy users were able to see those courses that are in CourseValidation for the instructors they're associated with. Right now these courses do not show at all to the full proxies unless the have already been imported either by the instructor or by staff via the client.

  4. Reporting on User information and Copyright information

At the Access Services conference in 2017 Ares users mentioned they would like more reporting about User information and Copyright information.

  5. Ability to limit which status(es) batch item upload will work with

They would like for the batch item upload to only upload files for items that are at specific queues, such as 'In Stacks Searching' and/or 'Awaiting Scanning.' They would like for it to work the way Odyssey Helper does in ILLiad. This is because the batch upload functionality automatically routes the item to available on reserves. Staff might still have to do a few things with it, such as finish copyright processing.

  6. Warning when cancelling a hard copy item if other courses still need it

When an instructor or staff person cancels a hard copy item, we need a way to know if this physical book is still needed on reserve for another current or pending course item. A popup notice or something like that would be very helpful.

For example, if a book is on reserve for several English courses, and one of the instructors decides to cancel their Ares item, we don't want to accidentally put the book back in the stacks since it is still on reserve for other courses right now.

We also wouldn't want to put a book back in…

  7. Sort in the “Import Items” view in the web application

It would be great if end users could sort in the “Import Items” view in the web application.

  8. Make item availability dependent on copyright being processed

The copyright process is a virtual queue, meaning that it can be processed at any point during the transaction. But there is nothing stopping a site from putting something up on the web before copyright has been verified.

It doesn't often happen, just because of the timing. And if something comes up, sites typically just remove the item. But some sites would like to make the item availability dependent on copyright being completed.

  9. Monitoring length of time item is in "Awaiting copyright processing" virtual queue

It would be nice to measure how long items stay in the “Awaiting Copyright Processing” queue. Currently, when staff open an item in this queue and check for copyright compliance, if everything is ok, they simply remove the checkmark in the “Copyright required” box and the item is removed from the queue. However, removing the checkmark is not recorded in the “History” tab of the item. Therefore, I cannot see a way to measure (retrospectively) the time it takes between an item arriving in that queue (currently I look at the CurrentStatusDate to see when an item has arrived in…

  10. It would be helpful if the 'ValidationUser' could display as TBD or TBA instead.

It is confusing on the staff side, and occasionally, current courses might not have an assigned instructor yet, so students see the ValidationUser displayed on the course details page.

  11. It'd be nice to have active links in the location field for eReserves items (similar to how links are displayed in the Link Checker).

Therefore, there would be no need to open the item record in order to access the link, and it would also make it easier to copy/paste.

  12. recommender services via JSON

include a space in the service request pages (openURLBook etc) that allow the query of json results to different recommender services based on mediaType (syndetics for books, bx recommender service for articles, etc.)

  13. create mail merge function for Harvard Business Review permissions letters

Frequently, there are rightsholders who require custom permissions letters to be sent to them via PDF. the course information is in Ares, but there is no good way to merge this information with a mail merge template.

  14. Add "merge" functionality Rightsholder Maintenance.

Currently there is essentially no good way to maintain duplicate records in Rightsholder Maintenance. I want to be able to merge duplicate records so that I can eliminate duplicates that have occurred because of staff turnover throughout the years without losing the copyright history on the rightsholder.

  16. Using virtual flags with courses

Being able to add a virtual flag to an item is really helpful. There are times when I wish I could flag a course as well. For example, sometimes work on a course starts before the actual course instructor is hired and we need to make sure to go back and replace a staff or generic username with the instructor once we have their information. Also, when courses are cloned ahead of time before the new schedule of classes is published, we sometimes have to change the course code (section numbers) so that our script adds students to the course…

  17. Allow for multiple LMS/CMS field-mappings with different params

Many sites have multiple CMS/LMS integrated with Ares. Sometimes they require different params to match to important Ares fields. For example, one site uses Moodle, Schoology and Blackboard. Moodle is unable to add a custom param that pulls from the database. They're using the userid param for the username, but both Blackboard and Schoology's userid values do not match up to the Moodle user_id. They're faced with either a complicated username conversion or just allowing users to end up with multiple accounts, one for each LMS. (Luckily they won't have much overlap, but it will probably happen to…

  19. Upgrade cross listings to allow Ares to combine cross-listed courses and sections

Currently, when two course pages are generated by imported course and user data, instructors sometimes must add materials separately for each section. For example, for PHIL/RELI101, some students sign up for PHIL101 and others for RELI101. When this happens, the data generate PHIL101 as one course and RELI101 as a separate course, which means that the instructor must upload the materials for one listing and then for another. There is a similar issue with classes with multiple sections. It would be very convenient if the cross listing feature would set things up so that any action done in one connected…
