Provide automatic OCR for posted PDFs
It would be wonderful if Atlas could provide a way to automatically convert PDFs to a more accessible format by performing automatic OCR on the documents uploaded or scanned. Many of these PDFs are re-used when the courses are taught again, so it would be great if OCR could be done on all PDFs in the Ares folders.

Send mass email to instructors via Ares client.
We'd like to be able to send a mass email to all instructors who use Ares i.e. create one email and be able to choose "instructor" as the subset of Ares users that the email gets sent to. This enables us to send out reminders and other notifications to all faculty at once.

If importing items from another course, prevent instructors from accidentally adding to the old course.
When importing from the old course, that list of items that displays shows the old course info which has an option to add items to the old course. Instructors get confused and add it to the wrong course.

Course and user information comes from the load (overwrites Ares data)
Course and user loads - changes to the user and course information loaded would overwrite the user and course information in the Ares database. There would be an option to prevent web users from editing their own user info and course info. Course and user info could be edited (overridden) in the staff client, but subsequent edits of the course and user info would not carry over after the client edits were made.

Allow instructors to clone items from other instructors' courses
This is a common request from new implementations and also prospective Ares sales. Libraries would like for instructors to be able to access other courses from different instructors so that they can clone items to their own courses. This is especially helpful with multiple instructors who teach various course sections. Shared lists do not solve this problem for two reasons: the instructors would only be able to see a multi-instructor shared list of items if it was department-based, and if the instructors belonged to the same department, and if the department was filled out in the instructor's user records to…

Ares as an LTI Consumer
The ability for Ares to send information via LTI to another system rather than just being a target. For example, the Avalon media repository system handles streaming media for reserves and it also used LTI. Faculty request items via Ares though. So, when a course is created in Ares, that information could be written into Avalon via LTI. Then sites could use the permalink from Avalon within Canvas.

Many of us are using MacBook Apple computers, and it would be helpful if Ares could be installed on a macOS.

Improve the performance of the link checker process
Currently, the link checker routine loops through a list of all the URLs it needs to check and sends them requests one at a time. Since this blocks the process while it waits for a response from the web server, we could improve the performance of the link checker significantly by testing multiple URLs in parallel asyncronously.
This will require some research to determine how many web requests we can make at once, since the limit may differ depending on the system, its configuration, or the domain name of the links being checked.

Review web interface for compliance with WCAG 2.
Within the last year our institution (Towson University) reviewed the Ares web interface for accessibility prior to procurement. We did customizations independently and with Atlas Systems to improve the accessibility of the web interface, and suggest accessibility be part of the product plan. A report of our findings are available by request - jcaffrey@towson.edu

Upload Video Files to Ares - allow for streaming
This has being coming up a lot of us recently where faculty are actively asking for streaming versions of things. The problem we face is that we don’t have a great place to host streaming files at the moment. We are mostly using licensed streaming content from Swank or Kanopy, but we have run into issues with things we need to host locally. We have used Avalon and Panopto as solutions for hosting streamable content, but neither solution are ideal for us at the moment. It would be great if we could upload streaming content to Ares directly, much like…

Allow "% of work" as column option
Add "% of work" to the column chooser for staff client queues, and in particular, course items grid view.
Often, we have multiple chapters of a single work created as individual items. Having this % displayed would allow us to quickly total the % of the work to determine if it is in compliance with copyright policy. At present, we need to open each individual item record.

Automatic Cover Letter
We currently attach a cover letter with complete citation info & a copyright statement to all scanned PDFs, in order to maintain the integrity of the bibliographic information if the PDF is printed out. We would like there to be a way to generate this directly from the system!

Option for staff to get email when a new item is created
Not at the beginning of the semester (which would overload staff), but later on when items are just trickling in.

End of Semester report to Instructors
This came up at the Access Services Conference in 2017: It would be great to have one button that sends statistics for the semester to instructors like a 'end of semester report'. it would be a great marketing tool too, to share what the library supplied for their courses, how it was used, how much copyright was paid on their behalf maybe too.
