  1. Allow instructors to batch change/remove tags on the web.

Allow instructors to batch change/remove tags on the web. Right now instructors can batch add (4.7 release) but not batch edit or remove.

  2. Allow multiple instructors for a class that have equal rights

As an instructor I want to have co-instructors for my classes that are treated the same as me versus proxies so that students can find classes under either of us or we can have equal rights.

Thanks for voting on this idea. Could you provide your preferences on specific options?

Three questions about web searches for students:

    1. If a course does NOT have currently have an instructor attached to it, should this course appear in the “search by instructor” results in the web?

    2. Should courses with no instructors appear in any web searches? If so, should there be some distinction, where only courses that have course or full proxies, but no instructors appear – whereas courses with NO administrative user (no instructor, no proxies) don’t appear at all?

    3. Should the “search by instructor” web search return matches for course proxies or full proxies? Should it return matches from the text in the Displayed Instructor field or just results based on matches of the first name/last name of users with an instructor role in active/upcoming courses? Our initial plans were to have results returned…

  3. Custom Paramaters for LTI integration to allow links to individual reserves items

At UMass Amherst we have an LTI integration between Moodle and Ares. Our support group gets frequent requests from faculty is to be able to link directly from Moodle to particular items in their Ares courses. It would be considerably more user-friendly to display a link in the LMS in the context of a week’s assignments rather than to have a single link to Ares (so that instructors then have to direct students to go find a particular resource in the eReserves items list for the course).

According the the Moodle tool tips on the LTI setup page, it should…

  4. Users are created with stub accounts if not in UserValidation if the user can login via LDAP or RemoteAuth

When a user logs in via LDAP or RemoteAuth the first time, their account is created with their Username copied in the LibraryID field. They are shown the NewAuthRegistration.html page, but if the site is using CourseUser loads and the username is not in the UserValidation table yet, the user is stuck with a stub account if the site is passing through the uservalidation data as hidden in the registration page. Later, a user cannot come in via LTI (because their ExternalUserID is blank) and cannot come in via the webpages (they are still sent to the registration page, but…

  6. Improve the performance of the link checker process

Currently, the link checker routine loops through a list of all the URLs it needs to check and sends them requests one at a time. Since this blocks the process while it waits for a response from the web server, we could improve the performance of the link checker significantly by testing multiple URLs in parallel asyncronously.

This will require some research to determine how many web requests we can make at once, since the limit may differ depending on the system, its configuration, or the domain name of the links being checked.

  8. Option for staff to get email when a new item is created

Not at the beginning of the semester (which would overload staff), but later on when items are just trickling in.

  9. Way to clone several items into multiple courses (sections) at once

They have course designers contact them telling them they want course so and so set up with the items from last fall and there will be a ton of sections of that new course. So staff pull up one of the old courses, and select all the items and clone them all into each of the new courses one by one, which is very tedious.

Maybe there could be a better way to apply a shared list to a whole bunch of courses at one time?

  10. Print Course Reading Lists

It would be really helpful for a number of professors to be able to print a course reading list. The Export Course Info option produces a (not very well formatted) excel file that has a lot of extra system information that professors don't need. It would be nice for Ares to produce a Word doc (or something similar) that professors could download that lists just the course information (title, code, section, semester etc.) and the readings associated with it.

  11. If importing items from another course, prevent instructors from accidentally adding to the old course.

When importing from the old course, that list of items that displays shows the old course info which has an option to add items to the old course. Instructors get confused and add it to the wrong course.

  12. Ares as an LTI Consumer

The ability for Ares to send information via LTI to another system rather than just being a target. For example, the Avalon media repository system handles streaming media for reserves and it also used LTI. Faculty request items via Ares though. So, when a course is created in Ares, that information could be written into Avalon via LTI. Then sites could use the permalink from Avalon within Canvas.

  13. Flag items with user notes

When an instructor/proxy puts a user note in the online request forms, flag these requests with "User Note" or something similar, but keep them in the current queue. (This could be done in tandem with 17708071, which asked for the items grid to indicate when there is a user note.) Our instructors (unsurprisingly!) think that when they write a note, we are alerted to their note, but in many cases we never see the note, especially if they add the link or upload the PDF themselves.

  14. Option to store multiple documents for a single item

This keeps the site from having to manually combine them into a new single document for storage with the item.

  15. prevent instructor from making items available for dates outside the semester dates

The student won't be able to see the item and the staff client forces staff to "correct" the dates anyways.

  17. Allow routing rules to add a flag to an item but leave it in the same status

Allow routing rules to place a flag on an item while keeping it in the same queue. Right now if you try to do that, it routes the item into a queue with the name of the flag instead of actually adding a flag and leaving it in the same status.
